Remembering Queen Elizabeth II – meeting Lady Gaga

World

On the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death, we remember her meeting with Lady Gaga. The meeting went down in history because of Gaga's unique red latex dress.

On December 7, 2009, Blackpool hosted a unique event – the annual Royal Variety Performance, during which artists from around the world perform in front of the British royal family. That evening, Lady Gaga, then a 23-year-old star whose career was taking off at a dizzying pace, appeared on stage. It was there that she met Queen Elizabeth II – wearing an outfit that is still considered one of the most memorable in the history of the stage.

For the occasion, Gaga chose an outfit by designer Atsuko Kudo, who specializes in latex designs. It was a long, fitted dress in a deep red color, with a wide, theatrical ruff collar and a train several meters long. The outfit was not only avant-garde, but also full of symbolism – it referred to the Elizabethan era and the costume of Queen Elizabeth I, in a modern, latex interpretation. Nicola Formichetti, the artist’s creative director at the time, oversaw the entire project. Lady Gaga paired the dress with pointed red high-heeled shoes, and her makeup was accentuated by red crystals around her eyes. Her hairstyle – platinum, curled hair – added to the theatrical character of the whole look.

During the gala, Gaga performed the ballad “Speechless,” which she dedicated to her father. She appeared on stage at a piano set on surreal, sculptural legs—an element that added to the impression and fit in with her characteristic, artistic performance style. After the performance, Lady Gaga had the opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in person. Photos of their meeting – the monarch in an elegant turquoise outfit and the young artist in red latex – went viral around the world. Gaga herself admitted that she is a big fan of the queen and felt honored to be able to participate in the event.

The media immediately picked up on the unusual pairing of an avant-garde artist and a queen who had seen almost everything in her role. TIME jokingly wrote that Gaga tried to impress the queen with her red, but Her Majesty remained unmoved. Marie Claire described the outfit as “Elizabethan-style gothic red latex” while Hello! Magazine emphasized that it was one of the most spectacular interpretations of tradition on the British stage.

The meeting between Lady Gaga and Queen Elizabeth II went down in history as the moment when the avant-garde of pop culture met the tradition of the British monarchy. The red latex dress—balancing between extravagance and homage to history—became a symbol of Gaga’s artistic courage and creativity, and at the same time proof that even the most unconventional style can find its place in a royal setting.
