Jenelle Monáe's new book premiered on April 19, 2022. The author put on latex outfits for meetings and TV interviews to promote her book.

Janelle Monáe is an American singer, actress, dancer, songwriter, performer and activist. She was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2018 for her album “Dirty Computer”. It depicts a fantastical world where thoughts could be controlled or erased by a few. No matter who you were, your life and feelings were dictated by others. It appeared that by controlling a person’s thoughts and self-perceptions, one gained the bland right to decide who someone was and what would happen in life. A sequel to this work is the book “The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer,” which began to be written during the pandemic. It combines genres such as science fiction, cyberpunk, urban fiction, and LGBT literature. It is an anthology, or collection of short stories that take place in the future and deal with themes of queerness, race, gender pluralism and love.

On the occasion of the book launch, the author held several meetings and interviews. In very many cases she chose latex outfits. One such interview took place on the show Live With Kelly and Ryan. Monáe stated that the outfit reflects her current situation in life and, in her words, “If it’s not light and fun, if I can’t come on Kelly and Ryan in a cosplay outfit, I won’t show up.”. The outfit is a custom design done by Dead Lotus Couture and is inspired by the anthology character Seshet. Another look was featured on the show CBS Mornings. The centerpiece is a white latex dress with black cuffs and a black and red collar. The look is complemented by stockings, massive stiletto heeled boots, and a headpiece. There were many compliments from the hosts, who pointed out the uniqueness of the outfit and the fact that not everyone would wear it.

A third example is Janelle’s conversation with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show. It is important to note what the writer says about herself: “I don’t have to prove anything to anyone today. (…) I’m at this place where I’m ready to celebrate. If we’re not talking about vacations, I don’t wanna talk. If we’re not planning a vacation…. it’s just like… what are we doing?! We are supposed to be living our best life. I’m young, I’m creative. No, seriously – we are supposed to be living our Earth experience in the best possible way.”.

Janelle Monáe hasn’t always been where she is today. In her own words, it’s been a process of moving from what can and does come out, to what she herself wants and feels. It takes time. Today she is not afraid to say that she is really happy and feels good. One of the important factors in that is being able to express herself through art, music, writing and clothing. Janelle is not afraid to wear latex outfits and promote her science fiction book in the process. It is certainly also a message to everyone to seek themselves and their path.
